I wonder if upgrading to a newer version/snapshot of planetplanet will fix my problem of livejournal users taking the whole page when they get switched to USER.livejournal.com from www.livejournal.com/USER .

Nope, sadly not. Planet is fairly broken in it's handling of dates in feeds, in so much as it doesn't believe them and decides it knows better. The result is that you get entries at the top rather than in their correct ordering. I have a rewrite of planet in perl that didn't have a problem with the change.
